IRFU launches new alternative jerseys for Ireland and purple jerseys

The IRFU has released the Irish home and alternative purple jerseys for the men’s and women’s teams for the coming season.

The kits, which were again produced by Canterbury, will be worn throughout the 2021/22 season and will be worn for the first time during the Irish test matches in November.

The house kit is cool, but not particularly exciting. The shirt once again has a white border, unlike the last home shirt which had a black border.

There are some slight differences between men’s and women’s jerseys, especially the design on the shoulders / arms.

The men in green could play purple in November.

The alternative kit is more likely to generate discussion. The jersey is predominantly purple, with black also on the front of the jersey. The shorts that go with the jersey are black.

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time Ireland has had a purple alternate jersey, as the IRFU last released a kit with the somewhat unconventional color in 2016.

Irish rugby seems to have a certain penchant for color, as Leinster and Ulster have had alternate purple jerseys in recent years.

Ireland has shied away from its traditional white alternative kit in recent years.

Ireland have opted for a predominantly white jersey in their alternative kit for much of their history, but they have eschewed the traditional color more often in recent years.

Black has been chosen as the main color in Ireland’s Alternative Kit three times over the past 10 years, while purple has featured twice in the same time frame.

Ireland played Italy in a predominantly white jersey in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match in 2019, but even then black featured heavily in that kit.

While purple might not be the first color that comes to mind when thinking of Ireland, it’s a rather unique choice for an alternate jersey, which at least makes kitsch matches. less likely.
