With the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on the horizon, Chicago hockey fans are excited to see Patrick Kane, Seth Jones and (possibly) Alex DeBrincat skate for the Americans. As construction continues, Team USA and one of their biggest rivals Canada recently dropped out of further talks.
Let’s take a look at each country’s new look.
United States Team
Americans have always sported interesting looks at the Olympics. Last time around, there was the shield, and this year’s USA team jersey has a classic letter look with a modern twist – metallic lettering.
Here’s what Team USA has to say about their design:
“American pride and ingenuity was the inspiration behind the look of USA Hockey. The new USA Hockey jersey pays homage to America’s industrial past, while representing the future of innovation and technology. The USA wordmark on the front of the chest uses bold character and precise detailing to create a bevelled metallic aesthetic.
A nod to the symbols of America, a subtle band of stars is placed between red, white and blue stripes that surround the chest and arms on the home and away jerseys. Inspired by American muscle cars and traditionally bold hockey designs, the United States team alternate jersey features a dark blue double stripe around the chest and arms.
The traditional USA Hockey shield is outlined in gold and sewn to the shoulder as a badge of honor. The internal message on the back of the neck, “Driven By Pride,” reminds athletes and fans that they are, in part, motivated by pride in competing for their country at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “
Team USA has gone modern while keeping some old elements in this look. The design is simple but still has a deep meaning. Fans probably won’t be too thrilled at first glance, but maybe the new look will gain appreciation with a better understanding of the design.
The Canadians took their design out of the park. They continued their tradition of using the famous maple leaf, but adjusted the design on the veins of the leaf so they could have more fun with it. Team Canada has a color defined as white with the red maple leaf. The other two feature black maple leaves with red outlines against black and red fields. It’s simple but particularly eye-catching.
Here’s what Team Canada had to say about their inspiration:
“We all know Team Canada is a force of nature. So it’s fitting that the design was inspired by northern storms, which are rapidly moving cold fronts that originate from the north and send strong winds southward, causing temperatures to drop rapidly. The graphic lines on the crest of the maple leaf give dimension to the design, but are also representative of how snow and arctic winds are depicted on weather maps. These weather map-like lines also appear on the shoulder yoke of the black jersey, creating a subtle maple leaf pattern.
Team Canada and its fans should be really happy with the design. Now the question becomes: will they play as well as they look?
